“You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes”- The Matrix, 1999
What if i told you that everything you know is a lie, Everything that exists in this world is just a hallucination. and in reality you are just standing in a metal institution screaming at a wall.
Sure it sounds far fetched, but how can you really be sure?
- What do you think is ‘real’ ?
“Cogito ergo sum, I think, therefore I am”- René Descartes
All you really know is that you can think, and that you exist.|
Everything else is just electrical signals fired off by your senses.
A human brain in a jar could easily be fed electrical impulses to the point where it knows no difference. this is a very popular concept and the basis for the matrix films[fun fact, during the development of the matrix films the original idea was for the machines to be using human brains as a massive CPU array. something that makes way more sense instead of batteries. but the suits didn’t think people would get it.]
If a being is fed only one source of information, or only hears about something from a single source of information, that’s all they will believe. There is a famous test in ape psychology where 5 chimps are placed in a room with a ladder in it. a series of water sprinklers in the ceiling and then a banana placed on the top of the ladder. Quickly a ape climbs the ladder and just before they reach the top the whole room is sprayed with water.
Over time they remove and replace an ape at a time, and every time an ape attempts to climb the ladder the rest of the apes attack it.
Eventually there isn’t a single ape in the room that has ever actually been sprayed, but they know that the ladder is bad news and should be avoided at all costs. even if they don’t actually know why.
One of the biggest concepts that what we really know might not be real is how the universal constants of physics and math seem to be oddly preset, and the ideas that once a Civilization reaches a certain point of technology and post scarce society they will make a perfect simulation of their world for the citizens to live in bliss in. So there’s a good chance that humanity is just living in one of these simulations and due to the sheer age of the universe its not entirely impossible.
- What do you think might be two positive and two negative aspects of the HoloLens if it was to be widely used ?The HoloLens itself as a big headset isn’t a starter, people don’t want to use something like that in their day to day lives. however, the idea of a augmented reality where something like Hololens is embedded into your glasses? now that will be big. Positives of Hololens are the ability to easily view 3d models of things for better visualization of design and providing medical/tradesmen/scientists with easy ways to see stuff before they actually work with it. provide a surgeon with the patients damaged organ before they even get near it with their tools.
- Do you think the Oculus rift will have a life outside of games?
VR headsets as a device will remain a niche product, but as a niche it will have a lot of application in very immersive games and uh……..porn….*cough*The reality of the fact is that people just don’t want to wear big headsets on their heads for long periods of time
- Post a link to (or embed) an online video that demonstrates the use of one of these technologies and explain briefly what it is and why you have chosen it.Not exactly a showing off of the current tech, but its in the same mindset.
It’s a world where a large portion of the population live in constant VR, and what happens surrounding it.
I feel like, whilst the concept of questioning reality of very applicable true VR is a while off the concepts behind it are valid. Because as is said at the start all we are is just electrical impulses in a big bag of meat.
Now excuse me but i have busy wall screaming to do.
